NASA's Evolvable Mars Campaign and Lockheed Martin's Mars Base Camp both planned crewed missions with the same first stop: park at Phobos, then go down. Japan's MMX mission launches for Phobos on 20 October 2026, lands in 2027, and brings a piece of it home in 2031. Everyone who gets to Mars passes through here.

In 2009 Buzz Aldrin went on live television and said there is a monolith on Phobos. He was right. NASA's cameras have photographed a tall, sharp-edged object standing alone on the surface, casting a long shadow. Nobody has explained it. Phobos has been looking at it ever since.
